CrossFit and Barbell Fitness Athletes

Dr. Kate Dowd, PT has been a physical therapist since 2007, having worked primarily in orthopedics and sports medicine. She has been active in CrossFit since 2013 and has specialized in working with this population since opening her own private practice in 2017. Having worked with all levels of barbell and fitness athletes from the health-minded novice to the semi-professional or professional Games-level, she has helped hundreds of clients rehab through injury while continuing to make gains in the gym setting. Picking up where “traditional” physical therapy left off, Kate bridges the gap between being merely functional to being able to perform at high levels and tolerate the demands of the sport while reducing risk of re-injury.

Equestrian Fitness & Rehabilitation

Dr. Kate also has a passion outside of the gym and within the barn walls, enjoying horseback riding whenever possible. Over the years, she has worked with many equestrians of various disciplines both in -person and from a virtual coaching capacity to address the needs of riders all over the world. Though Dr. Kate’s personal riding background includes the English disciplines with eventing being the focus, she has also coached Western barrel racers and cutters whose enjoyment and performance of their riding has been impacted by various aches and pains. She has also been a regular speaker at camps/clinics for the side saddle at USET in Peapack-Gladstone, NJ, providing lectures and demonstrations on body mechanics, strength balance and posture control that impacts a rider’s position and balance in the saddle.

Pregnancy and Postpartum Fitness

Having navigated fitness through multiple pregnancies and post partum time periods, Dr. Kate became increasingly interested in helping other women through their own journeys of navigating this very challenging time of their life. She has taken many hours of continuing education to better understand this often overlooked population and seeks to empower each woman to continue healthy activity levels both during and after pregnancy. Focus is on teaching proper breathing and bracing techniques, maintaining appropriate intra-abdominal tension during exercises, pelvic floor health, education on when it is time to regress a particular movement and when it is ok to push through. Emphasis on a happy healthy pregnancy, delivery and recovery for mom and baby.
